Spartan or Tinker
For everyday carry, the Spartan (12 tools, corkscrew) or Tinker (12 tools, Phillips screwdriver) are the classic choices — slim enough to forget in your pocket. If you want scissors added, upgrade to the Climber. Want the ultimate compact powerhouse? The Compact packs a nail file, scissors, metal saw and metal file into a surprisingly slim body. For keychain carry, the Classic SD is unbeatable at just 7 tools and 58mm.

Huntsman or Fieldmaster
The Huntsman is the most popular outdoor SAK for good reason — it adds a wood saw and scissors to the classic setup (15 tools). Step up to the Fieldmaster for a metal file too, or the Ranger for 21 functions. Serious campers love the SwissChamp for its 33 tools. Need a locking blade for safety? The Forester or Trailmaster in the 111mm range. Prefer Alox durability? The Farmer Alox is the go-to for outdoor work.

For air travel, the bladeless Jetsetter (58mm) passes most security checkpoints — it has scissors, nail file, screwdriver, toothpick and tweezers. Care & Maintenance

Open All Tools
Fully extend every blade and tool so water and soap can reach all pivot points, springs, and crevices. This is the step most people skip — don't.
✓ Do this over a sink or towel — the pivot area holds surprising amounts of debris.

Rinse with Warm Water
Run warm (not hot) water through the open knife. Hot water can warp Cellidor scales over time. Add a drop of mild dish soap for greasy or sticky buildup.
✓ Victorinox officially recommends warm water cleaning. Never dishwasher — high heat damages scales and electronics.

Scrub Pivots
Use an old toothbrush to scrub pivot points and between layers. A wooden toothpick removes compacted lint and debris from between layers without scratching.
✓ Compressed air (keyboard duster) works great to blast out debris from the liner channels.

Dry Thoroughly
Pat dry with a cloth, then leave open in a warm dry area for 30–60 minutes. Or use a hair dryer on low heat. Water trapped between layers causes rust.
✗ Never close the knife while wet — water trapped in the spring channels corrodes the steel.

Choose the Right Oil
Use food-safe mineral oil, Victorinox knife oil, or a light machine oil (3-in-1). Avoid WD-40 as a long-term lubricant — it displaces moisture but doesn't protect pivots. Avoid household cooking oils — they go rancid and attract dust.
✓ Victorinox sells their own knife oil (item 4.3301) which is food-safe and perfectly calibrated for SAK pivots.

Apply Sparingly
One small drop per pivot point is enough. Apply with a pin, toothpick, or the tip of the oil bottle's nozzle. More is not better — excess oil attracts lint and grit.
✓ Work each tool open and closed 10–15 times immediately after applying to distribute the oil into the pivot.

Target These Points
Every tool pivot (where each blade/tool rotates), the spring notches, and the back-spring contact points. The scissors spring also benefits from a tiny drop.
✓ Frequency: every 3 months for daily carry, every 6–12 months for occasional use, and immediately after any water exposure.

Wipe Excess
After working the tools, wipe all exposed surfaces with a clean dry cloth. Pay attention to blade flats and scales — oil residue on handles feels unpleasant and attracts pocket debris.
✓ A properly oiled SAK should feel smooth without feeling slippery or leaving oil on your fingers.

Know Your Angle
Victorinox blades are factory-sharpened at 15–20° per side (30–40° inclusive angle). This balances sharpness and durability well for multi-tool use. Maintain this angle for best results.
✓ If you go narrower (12–15°), the edge will be razor sharp but chip on hard tasks. Stick to 15–20° for a SAK.

Choose Your Tool
Victorinox Dual Sharpener (4.3323) — ceramic + diamond, fits in a pocket. Ceramic rod for light touch-ups. Diamond stone for reprofiling dull blades. Whetstone (1000/3000/6000 grit) for the best edge.
✓ The included nail file on many SAK models works as an emergency honing surface for the blade.

Sharpen the Blade
Maintain consistent angle across full blade length. Work from heel to tip in smooth strokes. Equal number of strokes per side. Finish with light strokes on a ceramic rod or leather strop to remove the burr.
✓ Test with paper — a sharp SAK blade should slice newsprint cleanly without tearing.

Scissors & Serrations
SAK scissors can be sharpened: hone the bevelled inside face only with a small diamond file or ceramic rod. For serrated blades, sharpen the flat back face at a very shallow angle — the serrations self-align. Scissors can be replaced for a few dollars.
✓ The saw blade doesn't need sharpening — it's hardened specifically and can be replaced as a part.

Everyday Carry
Keep it in a trouser pocket or use a belt pouch. Avoid storing loose in a bag with keys — keys scratch scales and can nick blades. The toothpick and tweezers are easily lost from loose pockets.
✓ Victorinox's own leather belt pouches (4.0523, 4.0520) are made to measure for 91mm models.

Long-Term Storage
Coat the blade and all tools with a thin layer of mineral oil. Close the knife. Wrap in a cotton cloth or use a cloth-lined pouch. Store in a cool, dry location away from humidity.
✗ Never store in leather long-term — leather contains tannins and moisture that corrode steel.

Avoid Humidity
Bathrooms, basements, and car glove boxes experience humidity swings that cause corrosion. Even stainless steel SAK tools can rust with prolonged moisture exposure, especially at the hidden spring interfaces.
✓ Silica gel packets in a drawer or pouch significantly extend storage life between uses.

After Saltwater Exposure
Rinse immediately with fresh water. Salt is extremely corrosive to stainless steel — even 18 hours is enough to cause surface rust at pivot points. Dry and oil within 24 hours of exposure.
✓ Alox-scale models (Pioneer, Soldier) are somewhat more resistant to saltwater than cellidor models due to the aluminum scales.

Victorinox Warranty
All Swiss Army Knives carry a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Send to any authorized Victorinox repair centre. Not covered: wear and tear, breakage from misuse, electronic components.
✓ Victorinox can disassemble, clean, replace individual parts, and reassemble your knife. This service is often free or very low cost.

DIY Parts
Victorinox sells individual replacement parts: scales (red, black, camo), toothpick, tweezers, pen, scissors spring, and even individual tools. The SAK modding community also offers aftermarket titanium and G10 scales.

Rust Treatment
Light surface rust: scrub with a paste of baking soda and water on a soft cloth. For deeper pitting: use a fine rust eraser or very fine wet/dry sandpaper (2000 grit). Rinse, dry, oil immediately after. Never use steel wool — it leaves particles that rust.
✓ A little surface rust does not mean the knife is ruined. SAK stainless steel is very tough — it can be fully restored with patience.

Sticky / Stiff Tools
A stiff tool is almost always just dirty pivots. Soak in warm soapy water for 10 minutes with tools open, scrub, rinse, dry, oil. If still stiff after lubrication, the back-spring may be bent — this is repairable by Victorinox.
✓ Never force a stiff blade — you risk snapping the spring. Soaking and oiling almost always resolves it.
